Jackson Chourio, Garrett Mitchell and Jake Bauers delivered RBI singles in the ninth inning as the visiting Milwaukee Brewers struck the first blow in a key four-game series by rallying for a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

The National League Central-leading Brewers rebounded after they were swept in a three-game series at San Diego. Milwaukee opened a two-game lead for the best record in the NL over the West-leading Dodgers, who dropped a half-game behind the East-leading Atlanta Braves in the overall league standings.

DL Hall (2-0) threw two scoreless innings of relief for the Brewers, and Trevor Megill pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 22nd save.

Trailing 4-2 in the ninth inning, Milwaukee received consecutive one-out singles from Joey Ortiz, David Hamilton, Chourio and Mitchell against Edwin Diaz (2-2) to tie the score 4-4. Bauers’ go-ahead single to right came against Alex Vesia.

Max Muncy hit a three-run pinch-hit home run for the Dodgers, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

The Brewers got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Dodgers right-hander Roki Sasaki struggled with his command. Milwaukee loaded the bases on singles from Gary Sanchez and Christian Yelich sandwiching Andrew Vaughn’s walk. Ortiz and Hamilton walked in runs with two outs for a 2-0 advantage.

The Dodgers cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning when Ben Rortvedt slapped an RBI single into left field.

In the sixth, Los Angeles’ Tommy Edman and Freddie Freeman walked with one out. Antonio Senzatela replaced Shane Drohan and fanned Teoscar Hernandez before Muncy hit his three-run shot to right-center for a 4-2 lead.

The drive was Muncy’s 131st long ball at Dodger Stadium, breaking a tie with former Los Angeles slugger Eric Karros for the venue’s record.

Freeman played one day after he tumbled onto the concrete in the visitor’s dugout while chasing a foul ball. He had been listed as day-to-day with two sore kneecaps as well as a sore side, hand and wrist.

Sasaki gave up two runs on four hits over six innings with five walks and two strikeouts. Drohan allowed three runs on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Yankees to end
six-game slide

Logan Gilbert pitched six sharp innings to help the Seattle Mariners stop their six-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the host New York Yankees on Thursday afternoon.

Weston Wilson homered in the second off New York’s Max Fried (4-4) for the only run of the day.

The Mariners avoided getting swept for the second straight series and won for only the sixth time in their past 21 games thanks to Gilbert’s standout performance. Seattle moved within five games of the first-place Astros in the American League West entering its critical three-game series in Houston.

Gilbert (9-7) permitted four hits and authored his fifth scoreless start this season. Gilbert struck out seven and walked one during his first win in four starts.

The right-hander pitched with runners on in four of his six innings but was aided by his defense and a pair of successful ABS challenges.

Gilbert allowed a one-out single to Trent Grisham in the third but right fielder Dominic Canzone made a strong throw to second base to record the second out. He got called third strikes on Grisham and rookie Spencer Jones when catcher Jhonny Pereda successfully challenged pitches that plate umpire Rob Drake called balls.

Fried allowed one run on five hits in five innings for his first decision since returning from the injured list July 22. The left-hander struck out four, walked two and was helped by rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. assisting double plays in the fourth and fifth.

After Gilbert’s outing ended at 95 pitches, Eduard Bazardo stranded two in the seventh and Jose A. Ferrer pitched a 1-2-3 eighth. Andres Munoz struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 21st save to complete Seattle’s ninth shutout.

The Yankees were shut out for the seventh time after winning the first two games of the series with comebacks in the seventh inning and beyond.

Walbert Urena, Mike Trout lead Angels past Rangers

Mike Trout went 3-for-5, drove in a run and scored another while rookie Walbert Urena allowed two hits over six innings, leading the Los Angeles Angels to their third straight win, a 7-0 drubbing of the Texas Rangers on Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif.

It was Trout’s second consecutive three-hit game. He has eight career stretches of at least back-to-back games with three-plus hits, but he hadn’t accomplished the feat since 2018.

Denzer Guzman also had three hits to go with an RBI and two runs while Josh Lowe and Adam Frazier each had two hits. Lowe and Jose Siri drove in two runs apiece for Los Angeles, which finished with 15 hits — a double Lowe and 14 singles.

The Angels improved to 7-3 against Texas this season, including 6-1 in Anaheim, after taking the last three games of a four-game series.

Urena (8-8) walked two and struck out five while lowering his ERA to 2.67. He has a 1.75 ERA over his past seven starts.

Jacob deGrom (8-8), who left after two innings with what the team called right triceps fatigue, took the loss to fall to 0-3 in five career starts at Angel Stadium. The two-time Cy Young Award winner allowed two runs on six hits, walked a batter and struck out three, giving him 1,998 career strikeouts. He threw 53 pitches, 35 for strikes.

Los Angeles took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles by Frazier and Trout, driving in Guzman and Frazier, respectively.

The Angels broke the game open with six hits in a four-run fifth inning against reliever Jordan Montgomery. Guzman drove in the first run with a bases-loaded infield single, and Lowe followed with a two-run single. Siri drove in the fourth run with a fielder’s choice.

Los Angeles extended the lead to 7-0 in the seventh on an RBI single by Siri, driving in Moises Ballesteros, who had singled.

Kyle Schwarber’s 2 HRs helps Phillies top Twins in Field of Dreams game

Kyle Schwarber went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs as the Philadelphia Phillies pulled away for a 7-1 win over the Minnesota Twins in the annual Field of Dreams game Thursday night in Dyersville, Iowa.

Brandon Marsh finished 2-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs for Philadelphia, which won on a warm, dry night on the famed Iowa farmland that served as the setting of the 1989 baseball movie blockbuster for which the game is named. Bryce Harper and Bryson Stott added one RBI apiece.

Luke Keaschall went 2-for-3 with a double and a homer to lead Minnesota at the plate.

Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola (4-9) earned his first victory since May 26. He held the Twins to one run on five hits in five innings, walking three and striking out nine.

Twins right-hander Taj Bradley (9-5) gave up five runs on seven hits in four innings. He walked four and struck out three.

The Phillies jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Schwarber started the scoring on the third pitch of the game, pulling a line-drive home run to right field and watching it land in the rows of corn behind the wall.
