A storm with the same name as a cyclone that wreaked havoc on the southeastern Big Island in August 2014 is unlikely to do the same this year, predict forecasters.

Tropical Storm Iselle, which is weakening slightly, is still closer to Mexico than Hawaii.

As of 5 p.m. today, Iselle was about 815 miles west of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, packing maximum sustained winds of 50 mph with locally higher gusts, and moving to the west-northwest at 9 mph.

Iselle, which was in the process of merging the remnants of the weaker former Tropical Storm Julio into its own system, sported tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 230 miles from the storm’s center.

According to forecasters, a turn to the west is possible on Wednesday, and Iselle could become a post-tropical cyclone on Thursday.

It remains a busy hurricane season in the Pacific, and forecasters also have their eyes on other disturbances at sea.

A front dubbed “Disturbance 2” is closer to the islands but still in the Eastern Pacific, well to the south-southeast of Hawaii. According to forecasters, this “weak and small low-pressure system … is producing some disorganized showers and thunderstorms.”

“Environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development, and a tropical depression is likely to form late this week or early this weekend while the system drifts northeastward, then turns to the west-northwest,” forecasters said.”

Forecasters rate Disturbance 2’s chances of becoming a tropical cyclone in the next week as high, about 70%.

A low-pressure front called “Disturbance 3” is to the south of Iselle and south of the Baja peninsula.

“Environmental conditions should support some gradual development of this system, and a tropical depression could form by early next week as it moves westward to west-northwestward at 10 to 15 mph,” forecasters noted.

Forecasters predict the chance Disturbance 3 will become a tropical cyclone in the next week as medium, about 50%.
