Three killed Friday in two traffic collisions

Police are seeking leads on unknown drivers involved in a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run collision in Keaau late Friday night on Highway 130 near the intersection of Orchidland Drive.

Officers responding to a 10:50 a.m. report found an unresponsive, unidentified man who had been struck multiple times by vehicles, all of which fled the area.

Police think the man may have been attempting to cross Highway 130 and was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision.

The victim was pronounced dead at 11:03 p.m. An autopsy has been ordered, and the victim’s identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next-of-kin.

Failure to render aid when a person is injured or killed in a traffic collision is a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $25,000.

The man’s death was the third traffic fatality within a 12-hour period on Friday. It was the 12th traffic fatality on Hawaii Island in 2026, compared to 12 traffic fatalities at the same time last year.

Earlier Friday afternoon, two people died in a two-vehicle collision on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway.

At 3:38 p.m., South Hilo patrol officers, along with personnel from the Hawaii Fire Department, responded to a report of a head-on collision near the 13-mile marker.

Police determined that the driver of a westbound 2018 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck lost control while negotiating a curve on the wet highway. The pickup crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Hilo-bound 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck that was towing a trailer carrying a mini excavator.

The front-seat passenger in the Tacoma, 29-year-old Troy Rasse of Pahoa, and a rear-seat passenger in the Tacoma, 24-year-old Jadelyn Cariaga of Hilo, were unresponsive at the scene. Police said neither passenger was wearing a seat belt.

Both were pronounced dead at 4:20 p.m.

The driver of the Tacoma, a 21-year-old man from Paauilo, was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

A rear driver-side passenger in the Tacoma, a 26-year-old woman from Hilo, and the driver of the Dodge, a 43-year-old Hilo man, were transported to HBMC before being medevacked to The Queen’s Medical Center for further treatment.

A front-seat passenger in the Dodge, a 42-year-old Hilo man, was transported to HBMC, where he was treated for minor injuries and later released.

Weather conditions are believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash.
