A 32-year-old Pahoa man is accused of subjecting a 27-year-old woman to sexual intercourse twice after the woman told him she didn’t want to have sex.

During his arrest, Joseph Kekedi Jr. elected to answer questions without a lawyer present after being advised of his rights, according to court documents filed by police. He reportedly told officers the woman consented to having sex.

Kekedi also agreed to a polygraph exam, according to the documents. During the polygraph session, police allege, Kekedi admitted the woman said she didn’t want to have sex, but he went ahead anyway.

The offenses are alleged to have taken place last Thursday at a residence on Pahoa-Kapoho Road.

Kekedi is charged with two counts each of second-degree sexual assault, plus domestic abuse aggravated by strangulation, three counts of domestic abuse, reckless endangering, possessing an automatic firearm, and nine additional firearms offenses.

The most serious offense, second-degree sexual assault, is a Class B felony that carries a potential 10-year prison sentence.

The woman reportedly told police Kekedi flipped over a platform she was sitting on, causing her to cut her left knee on lava rocks, slapped her on the chin, threw an open can of beer at her, then grabbed her by the throat and hair, pulled her down to the floor, and mopped up the spilled beer with her body.

The woman also claimed also told police that she hid in some bushes near the road during the dispute, and Kekedi fired two shots from a rifle in her direction.

Police executed a search warrant on the home and found several firearms there, according to the documents. Those include a DPMS Panther Arms AR-15 rifle, a Sturm Ruger .223-caliber rifle, a Winchester Defender 12-gauge shotgun, a Remington Bushmaster .12-gauge shotgun, a Savage Arms shotgun with a barrel shorter than the required 18 inches, and a Titan Tiger .38-caliber revolver.

None of the firearms were registered to Kekedi, the documents state.

During Kekedi’s initial court appearance Monday, Deputy Public Defender Arthur Indiola asked Hilo District Judge Jeffrey Hawk to free Kekedi on supervised release — a form of cashless bail —but Deputy Prosecutor Andrew Son objected.

Hawk maintained bail for Kekedi, who has no prior felony convictions, at $472,000, and ordered him to return today for or a preliminary hearing.

He remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.

The victim, whom the Tribune-Herald isn’t identifying, has filed a petition for a temporary restraining order against Kekedi.
