Police arrested a 43-year-old Kurtistown man Saturday morning at Hilo International Airport for allegedly torching a home where he lived with his wife on his father’s Orchidland Estates property.

Conrad William Keanini-Gomes was reportedly trying to catch a flight to Oahu and was at the airport’s Transportation Security Administration’s checkpoint when officers — who were responding to an all-points bulletin for Keanini-Gomes — took him into custody without incident.

Keanini-Gomes was charged with first-degree arson, a Class A felony punishable by 20 years imprisonment, upon conviction.

According to court documents filed by police, Keanini-Gomes’ 63-year-old father, Raymond Gomes Jr., who lives in the front house on the property, was awakened by his wife between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. to tell him she woke up to the smell of smoke. Gomes reportedly saw large plumes of white smoke coming from the rear house and arose to see Keanini-Gomes walking toward Keanini-Gomes’ white 2011 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck to flee as the rear house burned.

Gomes said he asked his son what was going on, to which Keanini-Gomes replied with a string of obscenities and something to the effect of “Nobody going live in this house!” documents state.

According to police, Gomes said he thought his son was referring to his son’s wife — with whom the son had been arguing and who had been seen by Gomes’ wife leaving the property on foot — with the disparaging profanity.

Gomes reportedly tried to remove multiple burning gas cans from the rear home in an attempt to save the structure, but was unable to get to a can placed in the home’s master bathroom because the bathroom door was blockaded by a wall of clothing, shoes and luggage — which was also on fire. Gomes told police, documents state, he was almost overcome by the black smoke inside the burning home.

The fire, which Hawaii Fire Department Battalion Chief Royd Henderson told police had been intentionally set, also destroyed Gomes’ 2001 Nissan Frontier. The red pickup truck, which was parked near the rear house, reportedly caught fire and exploded.

Documents state damage to the home was estimated at $300,000, while the truck was valued at $5,000.

While police and fire were at the scene, a younger sister of Keanini-Gomes who lives on Oahu, called dispatchers to tell them her brother was at the Hilo airport calling multiple family members asking them to buy him an airline ticket to Oahu. The sister said Keanini-Gomes told her he’d been arguing with his wife prior to igniting the fire, documents state, and when she asked why he burned the house, he replied something like, “F—k ’em, I neva like the house. I no care.”

According to police, after being advised of his Miranda rights, Keanini-Gomes reportedly told interviewers he intentionally set the fire — telling them he used a lighter, “lighting fluids” and matches. He allegedly said he owned the gas cans used to destroy the home and that his DNA would be on those gas cans. He also told investigators, according to documents, that he acts differently when on methamphetamine.

Documents state that in addition, Keanini-Gomes also told police he believed if the rear residence were fully engulfed in flames prior to HFD’s arrival, the front home would also be damaged and his father, stepmother and their two juvenile sons would be hurt or killed.

According to documents, Keanini-Gomes has two felony convictions from 2008 and his DNA is on file.

At Keanini-Gomes initial court appearance Tuesday, Deputy Public Defender Jennifer Robinson requested Hilo District Judge Jennifer Ng free Keanini-Gomes on supervised release — a form of cashless bail — or reduce his bail to $50,000. Deputy Prosecutor Amy Smith objected and asked that bail be maintained at $100,000.

Ng maintained Keanini-Gomes’ bail and ordered him to return to court today for a preliminary hearing.
