BIIF football: Warriors, Vikings, Wildcats and Cougars resume island action tonight; plus other weekend action
Another week of Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) football action returns tonight, and will continue through Saturday night across the isle.
Another week of Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) football action returns tonight, and will continue through Saturday night across the isle.
The island’s matchup of the week will feature two east-side teams battling it out at Wong Stadium — No. 12 Kamehameha-Hawaii visiting Hilo tonight.
The two programs faced off twice in 2025, with the Warriors winning the first matchup in a 32-29 thriller and the Vikings redeeming themselves with a 7-6 win the following week.
KSH (3-1 overall, 2-0 BIIF) has been on a tear over the last three weeks, beating opponents by a scoring margin of 127-60 in that span. The Warriors’ signature win came against No. 13 Konawaena on Sept. 3, where they marched back late against the Wildcats to win 28-21.
A week ago, KSH throttled Waiakea 50-12 to continue the impressive run.
Sophomore quarterback Kahekili Makekau is off to an efficient start to 2026 with the Warriors, throwing for nearly 1,000 yards, nine touchdowns and no interceptions through four games. Alongside Makekau in the backfield is star rusher Dallas Enriquez, as the junior has marched for 393 yards and six touchdowns on the ground — using his physicality and field vision to wear down defenses.
Makekau’s favorite receiver thus far has been senior Chaston Wong, who has caught 22 passes for 399 yards and four scores. Teammate Iokua Toci-Hookano has 397 receiving yards of his own, while also averaging an astonishing 33.1 yards per catch.
The team’s defense has also been strong, allowing just 78 passing yards per game.
The Warriors average 35.8 points per game while allowing under 21 in 2026.
After falling 49-6 to Beaumont in a non-conference bout last month, Hilo (2-1 overall, 2-0 BIIF) has only ascended. Since that loss, the Vikings routed Kea‘au 33-6 and shutout Kealakehe 45-0 on the road two weekends ago. After enjoying a bye last week, Hilo is rested and ready to take on KSH.
The Vikings are led by junior Damien Taaca and receivers Nakeallii Swope Souza, Brody Oden and James Ferreira. Through three games, Hilo is scoring 28 points per game while giving up 18.3.
West-side action will also take place this evening, as No. 13 Konawaena will host Kea‘au for a rematch of last year’s BIIF Division-I title game, where the Wildcats won 41-6.
After falling to Kamehameha two weeks ago, Kona (2-1 overall, 1-1 BIIF) righted the ship with a 63-0 beatdown of crosstown rival Kealakehe on Sept. 11. Star quarterback Keenan Alani had a powerful passing performance, throwing for five touchdowns and no picks.
The senior Alani is having another strong season, throwing for 747 yards, nine touchdowns and two picks through three games. His two favorite targets have been senior Anakin Punihaole and sophomore Ka‘el Johnson, who have both logged over 130 receiving yards.
The Wildcats backfield is led by senior Kainalu Alves and sophomore Shayden Domingo — two backs with dominant differing running styles.

Kona’s high-flying offense averages nearly 400 total yards of offense, putting up 36 points per game.
The Wildcats defense has also been strong, holding opponents to under 10 points a game.
The Cougars (0-4) are a younger squad in the middle of a rebuilding year. Kea‘au lost several key players from the past few seasons to graduation, and have been focusing on developing their young pipeline of talent.
Cashez Kenui leads the Cougars at quarterback, throwing to receivers such as Landyn Leonard, Kaleb Kepani-Lai, AJ Stone and Shayden Randall.
Unbeaten Honoka‘a will host its home opener against Waiakea on Saturday night on the Hamakua Coast, hoping to continue its hot start to the new season.
The Dragons have imposed their will early through two games — shutting out Kea‘au 34-0 on Aug. 8 and crushing Kealakehe 66-14 on Aug, 28. Due to Honoka‘a’s Sept. 4 matchup against Ka‘u being postponed and the Sept. 12 game against Kohala forfeited, the Dragons have not played a game in three weeks.
Nonetheless, the rested green and gold will be ready to go, led by quarterback Kage Yadao, who has passed for seven touchdowns and one interception in two games.
Yadao has plenty of weapons to throw to — such as Kiakahi Lindsey, Kaenan Martines and Hapaki Moniz — but perhaps the primary threat of the Dragons’ offense is running back Chrys Coelho, who has scampered for an incredible 353 yards and four touchdowns thus far. Coelho rushed for 215 yards and three scores against the Waveriders.
Waiakea (2-2 overall, 2-1 BIIF) is looking to get back on track after starting the season 2-0 but dropping the next two matchups. Despite the recent struggles, the Warriors have looked stronger compared to years past, averaging nearly 23 points per game.
Waiakea’s most dominant win came against Hawaii Prep on Aug. 29, where the Warriors routed Ka Makani 42-0 at home. They are led by quarterback Pono Miller, who has logged a passer rating of 160.4 through four contests. The offense is also sparked by running back Alelauloa Torres, who has scrambled for 384 yards and five touchdowns on nearly eight yards per carry.
Rounding out the weekend slate will be Ka‘u football making its season debut against the Cowboys on Saturday afternoon at Kohala High.
The Cowboys (0-2) are coming off a 28-7 loss to HPA on Sept. 5. Most of the team plays both sides of the ball, featuring playmakers such as Kaua Reyes and Kyle Caniedo.
