Police investigate Hilo murder they say is unrelated to Puna homicides

A murder investigation is underway after a body of a woman was found today in Hilo.

“At this time, there is no indication connecting this homicide to the three in Puna,” according to police.

Officers at 8:01 a.m. responded to Piopio Street after a State of Hawaii Parks Division employee found the woman.

Upon observation, the woman was not breathing and suffered injuries to her head and face consistent with being physically assaulted, police said.

She was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 8:38 a.m.

Detectives responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. An autopsy will be performed Friday to determine the exact cause of death.
