BIIF baseball: 6 Dragons named to All-Hawaii team; Salazar awarded COTY
The Honoka‘a Dragons headlined the Big Island selections in the recently-released ScoringLive 2026 All-Hawaii baseball teams, featuring senior Josyah Napoleon-Umeda — who was named Division II Player of the Year for his exceptional all-around play and leadership ability.

The 5-foot-6 two-way phenom’s selection came as no surprise, as Napoleon-Umeda led the state in home runs (6), wins on the mound (7), runs (30), hits (30) and batting average (.577).
In the HHSAA DII state final against Damien, Napoleon-Umeda pitched perhaps the best game of his career — allowing no runs and three hits while striking out nine batters across all 7.0 innings. It was the ace’s second complete game of the season, helping the green and gold win their first state title in program history and first for Honoka‘a High since 2015 (girls basketball).
“The past three years we didn’t get it done, but we knew this year our team was looking even better and we just got it done,” Napoleon-Umeda said in an interview with ScoringLive after the May 9 championship.
In the BIIF Division II championship against Hawaii Prep, Napoleon-Umeda struck out seven batters in the 6-3 victory.
Napoleon-Umeda’s strongest stretch at the plate this season came between April 6 and May 7, where he went nine straight games with a hit, including four of them with three hits. He additionally homered five times in that stretch.
Napoleon-Umeda hit seven doubles and three triples throughout the season — also stealing 12 bases. This fall, he will attend Allan Hancock College in California.
Napoleon-Umeda’s teammates — utility Isaac DeRego, outfielder Kiakahi Lindsey, infielders Jayden Salazar and Rory Crabbe and catcher Chrys Coelho were also named to the first team.
DeRego led the team in RBIs with 23, while Crabbe led in doubles (8).
Manager Waylon Salazar was named the Division II Coach of the Year after leading the Dragons to a perfect 17-0 record— leading the state in runs (162), hits (171), RBI (136), team batting average (.365), doubles (35), home runs (18), stolen bases (80), team ERA (0.40), strikeouts (179) and wins (17).
Joining Honoka‘a on the All-Hawaii Team was Hawaii Preparatory Academy, which finished second in BIIF DII (10-4) and went all the way to the state semifinals, where they came up a run short from playing the Dragons in the championship.

The red and white’s strongest stretch of the season came in the first half of the season, when HPA won six of its first seven games.
Senior ace Ed Lustik was selected to the first team after leading Ka Makani in innings pitched (28.0), wins (5), strikeouts (32) and hits (17). He finished the year with a 3.50 ERA. Lustik pitched one complete game during the season on April 20, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out seven against Ka‘u.
Ka Makani outfielder Leon Kikukawa, who led his team in runs (18), joined Lustik on the first team. Kikukawa hit for .302 on the season. He earned a hat trick in hits twice — first against Pahoa on March 3 and the second against Kohala on April 14. Kikukawa also logged two hits in HPA’s state quarterfinal win against Waipahu on May 7.
Pitcher David Culbertson and infielder Asher Anderson were named to ScoringLive’s second team. Anderson hit the team’s lone home run on Feb. 28 against Honoka‘a.
Ka‘u ace Caleb Crook, who tied with Napoleon-Umeda for first in the state in strikeouts with 59, was named to the second team. Crook finished 2026 with an impressive 1.88 ERA, striking out a season-high 14 batters against Pahoa on March 21.
Waiakea outfielder Jerrell Alston was named to the Division I First Team after leading the Warriors to an undefeated BIIF season (11-0) and state semifinal appearance — leading the group in hits (13), RBI (12) and home runs (2).
Alston hit .464 on the season, including a season-high four-hit performance against Konawaena on April 15. He also hit the iconic grand slam against Kamehameha-Hawaii late in the BIIF DII championship on April 29 — putting the Warriors in the driver’s seat to win the game.
Alston will next play NCAA Division-I baseball for Sacramento State next spring.
Alston’s teammate, pitcher Logen Doran, was named to the DI second team. He finished the year with a 3-1 record and 1.38 ERA, including 28 strikeouts. Doran logged a game-high 11 strikeouts against Hilo on March 27.
Joining Doran on the second team was KSH outfielder Iokepa Martines, who hit .405 with 17 runs for the Warriors. He had a three-hit performance against Kona on March 3.

KSH finished the year 10-6 overall.
