The week also featured the championships being split up into two divisions, while last year there was just one tournament.

In the Division I tournament, BIIF champion and No. 3 seed Konawaena fell 25-14 to Moanalua during Thursday’s quarterfinals at Mililani High School. The loss knocked the Wildcats out of state contention and into the consolation bracket.

The game was a passing duel, as both teams combined for just nine rushing yards.

Na Menehune set the tone early on, scoring the first two touchdowns of the afternoon. Moanalua quarterback Breidi-Ann Higa threw a touchdown pass to Jodie Keo and another to Alofa Simanu.

Kona was able to get on the board with six seconds remaining in the first half, as quarterback Ki‘ilei Leleiwi connected with Maui Gacayan for a 10-yard touchdown pass. But Na Menehune quickly responded in the latter half, as Higa found Simanu again for a 22-yard touchdown pass and two more scores to Keo.

The Wildcats were able to get a 58-yard touchdown pass to Jazmin Fillmore in the final 90 seconds of regulation, but the game was still out of reach for the green and white.

Higa finished the day completing 20 of her 32 attempts for 271 yards, four touchdowns and an interception (to Ava Shoosmith). Both Simanu and Keo combined for 14 receptions and 227 receiving yards.

Leleiwi completed 16 of her 33 attempts for 216 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions (one each to Gabrielle Bell, Styralynn Hoakalei Reyes and Shaydenurijah Key Bryd). Natelia led Kona in receiving with six catches for 93 yards. Defensively, Vaihere Alani logged two sacks.

The loss marked the Wildcats’ first of the season after finishing a perfect 12-0 against the BIIF, where they averaged over 40 points per game. They took on Kamehameha-Kapalama in Friday’s consolation matchup, while Moanalua moved on to play Campbell in the semifinals.

Hilo, the BIIF DI runner-up, took on Mililani in the first round of the DI tournament on Monday at home, falling in a 46-19 rout.

The Vikings season ended with a 7-7 record, averaging nearly 23 points per game.

BIIF Division II champ Hawaii Prep lost 12-6 to Waipahu in Thursday’s HHSAA DII quarterfinals. The game was a low-scoring affair, as all of the game’s points were scored in the third quarter.

Marauders quarterback Jxena Rivera threw the first touchdown of the night to Selena Castro-Antonio from 18 yards out, and running back Maddisyn Martinez ran for a two-yard score just a couple of minutes later.

Waipahu’s defense clamored No. 2 Ka Makani all afternoon, forcing quarterback Harley Kaniho to complete less than 50% of her pass and throw two picks — one to Shyenna “Shy” Marienthal and the other to Tristal Canne-Tanele. HPA finally broke through in the final two minutes of the fourth, as Madie Buczyna rushed for a 48-yard score. But even then, it was too late for a Ka Makani comeback.

Read more Napoleon Solo captures Preakness; top 3 did not run in Kentucky Derby

Defensively, HPA still made plays to give the Marauders fits, such as forcing two interceptions — one from Tae Detwiler and the other from Lehia Akau.

Rivera finished the day with 185 passing yards (17-40), while Kaniho concluded with 157 (15-33).

Ka Makani, like Konawaena, finished perfect against the BIIF with a 12-0 record. The red and white played Waimea on Friday in the DII consolation bracket.

On the other side of the DII bracket, Honoka‘a fell 31-6 to No. 4 Maryknoll in Thursday’s quarterfinals after upsetting fifth-seeded Molokai in Wednesday’s first round.

The Spartans were in control for the entire night, scoring the first four touchdowns — a nine-yard run from quarterback Puaena Herrington, a 24-yard pass from Herrington to Zoe Silva, another Herrington touchdown run and another touchdown throw to Silva.

Silva caught her third touchdown pass of the night after Dragons’ signal caller Kalei Moniz scampered for a 60-yard score in the third quarter — Honoka‘a’s first and only points of the evening. Silva finished with 10 catches for 102 yards. She also hauled in an interception on the other side of the field.

Moniz finished with 235 scrimmage yards (106 passing, 129 rushing). Teammate Aubrie Tabiesa also logged a sack.

The Dragons finished second in BIIF DII this season. They played Kamehamea-Hawaii in a consolation game Friday.

KSH, after beating Kauai in the first round earlier this week, was halted in the DII quarterfinals by No. 1 seed Kalaheo, who handled the Warriors 27-7 on Thursday at Pearl City High School.

While KSH gave the Mustangs some issues (two interceptions from Kekelaokalani Kalauokaaea-Kahele and another from Aisyss Respicio-Ragocos), Kalaheo finished with nearly 300 yards of scrimmage to the Warriors’ 196.

KSH got out to a 7-0 lead early after a Kalauokaaea-Kahele touchdown reception from quarterback Alohilani Kalaola-Maruquin. But from there, it was all Mustangs — as quarterback Elizabeth Kennedy threw three straight touchdown passes. The signal caller connected with Shannon Love, Jourdyn Kekauoha-Viena and another to Love. Payton Kamaka took over quarterback duties in the fourth quarter when the game was out of reach, throwing a touchdown to Kamaile Hassett.

Kennedy finished the night throwing for 135 yards, completing 14 of her 26 attempts. Kalaola-Maruquin threw for 173 and three picks (two to Alexia Barrera and another to Kekauoha-Viena).

Read more Partial funding allocated for Outpatient Care Center in Kona

Kalaheo went on to play Maryknoll in Friday night’s semis.

BIIF flag football: Five Big Island teams knocked out at states – Sports | Hawaii Tribune-Herald

[3

post-132","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-sports
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
