{"id":175,"date":"2026-05-19T19:38:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T19:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/movingtohawaiiguide.com\/?p=175"},"modified":"2026-05-19T19:38:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T19:38:13","slug":"three-killed-friday-in-two-traffic-collisions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/movingtohawaiiguide.com\/?p=175","title":{"rendered":"Three killed Friday in two traffic collisions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>Police are seeking leads on unknown drivers involved in a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run collision in Keaau late Friday night on Highway 130 near the intersection of Orchidland Drive.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movingtohawaiiguide.com\/?p=174\">Kona teen to compete in world jiu-jitsu competition this summer<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Officers responding to a 10:50 a.m. report found an unresponsive, unidentified man who had been struck multiple times by vehicles, all of which fled the area.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Police think the man may have been attempting to cross Highway 130 and was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision.<\/p>\n<p>The victim was pronounced dead at 11:03 p.m. An autopsy has been ordered, and the victim\u2019s identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next-of-kin.<\/p>\n<p>Failure to render aid when a person is injured or killed in a traffic collision is a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $25,000.<\/p>\n<p>The man\u2019s death was the third traffic fatality within a 12-hour period on Friday. It was the 12th traffic fatality on Hawaii Island in 2026, compared to 12 traffic fatalities at the same time last year.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Friday afternoon, two people died in a two-vehicle collision on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway.<\/p>\n<p>At 3:38 p.m., South Hilo patrol officers, along with personnel from the Hawaii Fire Department, responded to a report of a head-on collision near the 13-mile marker.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movingtohawaiiguide.com\/?p=172\">Miguel Andujar\u2019s solo HR lifts Padres past Dodgers 1-0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Police determined that the driver of a westbound 2018 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck lost control while negotiating a curve on the wet highway. The pickup crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Hilo-bound 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck that was towing a trailer carrying a mini excavator.<\/p>\n<p>The front-seat passenger in the Tacoma, 29-year-old Troy Rasse of Pahoa, and a rear-seat passenger in the Tacoma, 24-year-old Jadelyn Cariaga of Hilo, were unresponsive at the scene.
