{"id":48,"date":"2026-05-14T18:41:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T18:41:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/movingtohawaiiguide.com\/?p=48"},"modified":"2026-05-14T18:41:30","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T18:41:30","slug":"waimea-man-killed-on-kawaihae-road-while-changing-a-tire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/movingtohawaiiguide.com\/?p=48","title":{"rendered":"Waimea man killed on Kawaihae Road while changing a tire"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>A Waimea man was killed Sunday afternoon in a traffic collision on Kawaihae Road (Highway 19) near the 65-mile marker.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movingtohawaiiguide.com\/?p=46\">UH volleyball wins national championship<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At 1:22 p.m., South Kohala patrol officers responded to the collision and determined that a black 2008 BMW sedan was traveling east-bound (mauka) on Kawaihae Road when it veered onto the south (Kona side) shoulder and collided with a parked, unoccupied gold 2004 Toyota Camry sedan that was facing east on the shoulder.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Police identified the victim as 59-year-old Sione Tilini.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the collision, three individuals were outside the Toyota Camry on the passenger side of the vehicle changing a front passenger-side tire, police said. Tilini is believed to have been positioned between and partially underneath the passenger-side wheels of the Toyota when the collision occurred.<\/p>\n<p>The impact caused the Toyota to fall onto him.<\/p>\n<p>Tilini was transported to Queen\u2019s North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 2:47 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Two additional individuals, a 19-year-old man and an 11-year-old boy, sustained minor injuries after being struck when the parked vehicle was pushed forward during the collision. Both were transported to QNHCH for treatment and later released.<\/p>\n<p>The driver and sole occupant of the BMW, a 22-year-old Waimea man, was transported to QNHCH and remains in critical condition.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movingtohawaiiguide.com\/?p=44\">Florida woman dies in possible drowning in South Kona<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The BMW driver was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide, negligent injury, driving without a license, driving without car insurance, and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.<\/p>\n<p>Police have initiated a negligent homicide investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Police ask anyone who witnessed the collision or has information relevant to the investigation to contact Officer Dayson Taniguchi at dayson.taniguchi@hawaiipolice.gov or at (808) 326-4646, ext. 229.<\/p>\n<p>This was the fourth traffic fatality within five days.<\/p>\n<p>Two men died May 5 in a two-vehicle collision on Daniel K. Inouye Highway. The victims were from Hilo and Virginia.
