But Soto recovered by retiring Andy Pages and Freddie Freeman to end the game and record his ninth save.

Evan Sisk (1-0) picked up a key out in the top of the eighth just before the Pirates’ comeback to keep the Dodgers from adding to a 6-4 lead when he struck out Alex Call with a runner on second.

In the bottom of the fourth with the Dodgers leading 2-0, Callihan belted a 98-mph fastball from Ohtani and sent it 427 feet to right field for his first career home run.

But Los Angeles appeared destined to take its second in a row from the Pirates after Ryan Ward hit his first career grand slam in the top of the sixth off Pittsburgh reliever Carmen Mlodzinski.

Ohtani, who entered the game riding one of the best stretches of 10 starts to open a season in major league history, was not his typical unstoppable self.

Ohtani, who had allowed only one run in his previous four starts, gave up three earned runs on six hits, three walks, one hit batter, and struck out six over 6 2/3 innings.

Kyle Tucker led the Dodgers at the plate with two hits. Horwitz had two hits and Jake Mangum had three hits for the Pirates.

Jackson Holliday’s slam shoots Orioles past Mariners

Brandon Young threw seven shutout innings, Pete Alonso broke a scoreless tie with a sixth-inning home run and Jackson Holliday added a grand slam as the Baltimore Orioles halted a four-game losing streak by beating the visiting Seattle Mariners 7-2 on Wednesday night.

Young (5-1) held the Mariners to two hits and two walks while striking out five. Baltimore has won seven consecutive games when Young has pitched.

Alonso, Leody Taveras and Tyler O’Neill all had two hits for the Orioles, who had eight players with at least one hit. Alonso and Taveras each scored two runs.

Yennier Cano finished on the mound for Baltimore, logging the final 1 1/3 innings and recording a pair of strikeouts as part of the combined four-hitter.

Seattle, which lost for only the fourth time in its last 15 games, was limited to four singles. It was just the second time in their last 16 games that the Mariners were held to two or fewer runs.

Mariners starter George Kirby was clean through five innings before yielding Alonso’s blast at the beginning of the bottom of the sixth. The Orioles tacked on two more runs on RBI doubles from Taveras and Blaze Alexander.

Kirby (5-6) allowed seven hits and three walks while striking out 10. Three of his strikeouts came in the sixth, when the Orioles posted three runs.

Alonso has 14 home runs.

The Orioles got to reliever Domingo Gonzalez in the seventh, leading to Holliday’s two-out grand slam to right field for a 7-0 lead. Gonzalez gave up two walks and a single prior to Holliday’s third home run of the season.

The Mariners finally broke through in the eighth with Julio Rodriguez’s groundout and Josh Naylor’s two-out single providing a pair of runs off Grant Wolfram.

Fernando Tatis Jr. rips walk-off
homer as Padres rally to beat Reds

Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a game-ending solo home run with two outs in the ninth inning as the San Diego Padres rallied for a 5-4 victory over the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday afternoon.

Tatis sent a line drive just over the left field wall against Reds right-hander Chase Petty for his second home run of the season, both coming in the past 11 games.

Gavin Sheets and Samad Taylor each drove in runs in the eighth to tie the score 4-4 as the Padres won a series for the first time since May 22-24 against the Athletics. It was just the fourth victory in the past 16 games for San Diego.

Right-hander Michael King pitched into the seventh inning and Wandy Peralta (1-0) delivered a scoreless ninth to pick up the win.

JJ Bleday, Eugenio Suarez and Spencer Steer hit home runs for the Reds, who lost their fourth consecutive series. Right-hander Brady Singer gave up two runs over six innings to get into position for a win, but left-hander Caleb Ferguson was charged with two runs in the eighth and Petty (0-1) gave up the final run in the ninth.

The Padres got off to a fast start when Jackson Merrill singled with one out in the first inning and scored on Manny Machado’s double. Machado was thrown out at the plate by Bleday in left after a single from Will Wagner.

The Reds took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Bleday led off with a walk and Steer hit a two-run homer to left field.

The Padres got even in the fifth inning when Rodolfo Duran doubled with one out and Tatis delivered a two-out RBI single to right.

Bleday homered in the seventh inning, his 11th, giving the Reds a 3-2 lead. Cincinnati made it 4-2 in the eighth when Suarez hit a home run to right, his fifth, against right-hander Ron Marinaccio.

The Padres tied it in their half of the eighth by winning same-sided battles at the plate. Merrill scored on a double from lefty Gavin Sheets against Ferguson, and then Taylor singled against right-hander Tony Santillan to score pinch runner Jase Bowen.

Bryce Eldridge’s grand slam caps Giants’ stunning rally past Nats

Bryce Eldridge launched a walk-off grand slam with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday afternoon as the San Francisco Giants rallied from a 9-1 deficit with 10 runs over the final two innings to shock the visiting Washington Nationals 11-10.

After Matt Chapman and Rafael Devers homered as part of a five-run eighth that got the Giants back in the game at 9-6, the Nationals added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Curtis Mead homered off left-hander Reiver Sanmartin, who was making his San Francisco debut.

Down four, Luis Arraez and Chapman led off the last of the ninth with back-to-back doubles, closing the gap to 10-7, before Gus Varland walked Devers to bring the potential tying run to the plate.

Jung Hoo Lee then greeted left-hander Mitchell Parker (2-3) with a single, loading the bases for Eldridge, who took two balls before lofting a towering drive to right that barely cleared the brick wall at Oracle Park for the game-winner.

The homer was Eldridge’s fourth of the season, making him the youngest player in major league history to hit a walk-off grand slam, 109 days younger than Roberto Clemente when he did it on July 25, 1956.

Read more Potential Aaron Donald return has the Rams buzzing: ‘It would be one fun year’

Sanmartin (1-0) struck out two and allowed one run over the final two innings on the mound.

Earlier, James Wood belted his 18th home run and Foster Griffin coasted through six innings of one-run ball as the Nationals appeared headed for a three-game series sweep.

Wood’s homer, a two-run shot off Giants starter Robbie Ray in the third inning, produced the only scoring until the Nationals appeared to pull away in a four-run sixth.

After retiring the first two batters he faced in the sixth, Ray was pulled following the third of five consecutive hits. The left-hander eventually was charged with five runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three without issuing a walk.

Griffin, meanwhile, took a four-hit shutout into the last of the sixth before Chapman homered with one out. The left-hander called it a day at inning’s end, having allowed one run and six hits. He struck out five with no walks.

Chapman finished 4-for-5 with two homers, a double, a single, three runs and three RBIs. His homers were Nos. 5 and 6 this season.

Devers, Lee and Eldridge all scored twice, while Arraez chipped in with a pair of hits for the Giants, who had lost five straight at home.

Daylen Lile had four hits to give him a 6-for-11 series for the Nationals, who went 4-2 on a trip to Arizona and San Francisco.

Jose Siri’s
walk-off helps Angels top Astros

Jose Siri singled in automatic runner Nick Madrigal from third in the bottom of the 10th to give the Los Angeles Angels a 3-2 walk-off victory over the visiting Houston Astros in the rubber game of their three-game series on Wednesday night.

Siri lined an 0-2 fastball by Houston reliever Bryan Abreu (2-3) to left field to drive in Madrigal, who had advanced to third on a bunt single by Donovan Walton.

Logan O’Hoppe went 2-for-2 with a home run and Mike Trout also homered, walked and stole a base for Los Angeles. Ryan Zeferjahn (3-3) pitched a hitless inning of relief to pick up the win.

Shay Whitcomb and Cam Smith homered for Houston, which finished with just four hits.

Los Angeles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Trout’s 15th home run, a 404-foot line drive to center. It was the 419th home run of Trout’s career, which ranks 55th on the major league all-time list.

The Angels extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth on O’Hoppe’s third homer of the season, a 423-foot drive to the back of the bullpen in left.

Houston cut the lead to 2-1 when Whitcomb led off the sixth inning with his second homer, a 408-foot line drive to left-center.

The Astros tied it in the eighth when Smith greeted reliever Chase Silseth with his seventh home run to left, setting the stage for Siri’s game-winning single in the 10th.

Los Angeles received another dominant performance by starter Reid Detmers who threw five perfect innings to start the game and allowed one run on just one hit — the home run to Whitcomb — over seven innings. He struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter. He left after throwing 89 pitches, 63 for strikes.

Athletics’ bats break out late
with bombs to
rally past Brewers

LAS VEGAS — Carlos Cortes and Lawrence Butler each homered in a seventh-inning rally to give the Athletics a 4-3 comeback victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night in the deciding game of the three-game series at the home of the A’s Triple-A affiliate.

After being held to one run through six innings by Brandon Sproat, the A’s, who pounded out 12 homers in the first two games of the series, immediately broke through against the bullpen.

Cortes greeted reliever Chad Patrick (3-3) in the seventh with a leadoff homer, his sixth, to pull the A’s within 3-2. Zack Gelof doubled and Butler followed with his fourth homer.

Scott Barlow (2-0) retired two of the three batters he faced for the victory. Hogan Harris escaped a two-aboard jam in the eighth with an inning-ending double play, and Elvis Alvarado finished with a perfect ninth for his first save.

Sproat, 1-3 with a 5.97 ERA over his last seven starts, took a two-hit shutout into the sixth before Alika Williams got the A’s on the board with his first career homer, a one-out solo shot to cut the Brewers lead to 3-1.

The Brewers capitalized on a pair of leadoff homers off Jack Perkins for a 3-0 lead.

Gary Sanchez opened the second inning with his seventh homer to put Milwaukee up 2-0.

Jackson Chourio did the same the following inning, jumping on the first pitch from Perkins for his sixth homer.

The Brewers scored one in the first when Christian Yelich walked to open, advanced on a groundout, and scored from second on Andrew Vaughn’s two-out single.

Perkins, making his second consecutive start after 17 relief outings, allowed three runs on five hits in four innings, striking out four and walking three.

Cardinals score
early, often
against Mets to
win sixth straight

Jordan Walker went 2-for-5 with four RBIs as the St. Louis Cardinals extended their winning streak to six games with a 9-2 victory against the host New York Mets on Wednesday.

Cardinals starter Andre Pallante (7-4) held New York to two runs on three hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out five. The Mets managed just three hits total while falling to 1-4 against the Cardinals this season.

St. Louis got the scoring started early and never looked back as it reached New York opener Austin Warren (1-3) for two runs in the first.

JJ Wetherholt led off with a single and Ivan Herrera followed with a walk. After Alec Burleson grounded out to advance the pair into scoring position, Walker drove in Wetherholt with a single to center. Lars Nootbaar drew a walk to load the bases, and Masyn Winn hit into a fielder’s choice that brought home Herrera for a 2-0 advantage.

David Peterson replaced Warren in the second, and the Cardinals capitalized to pad their lead over the next several innings.

In the third, Winn drew a two-out walk before Nelson Velazquez launched a first-pitch sinker 403 feet into the left-center seats to make it 4-0.

Read more Man killed in hit-and-run was a fixture in the Filipino community

Tyler Callihan’s first career homers deliver Pirates win over Dodgers – Sports | Hawaii Tribune-Herald

[3

post-536","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sports
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
