NEW YORK \u2014 New York Yankees utilityman Jos\u00e9 Caballero must appear \u201calert\u201d and engaged with the pitcher when the pitch clock strikes eight seconds \u2014 otherwise umpires and opponents might continue to have a problem with his pre-pitch routine.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who said Major League Baseball issued the new guidance in a phone call with him on Monday night \u2014 a day after Caballero drew the ire of Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider, the latest dispute in season-long beef between Caballero and pitchers and plate umpires.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust make sure you\u2019re alert,\u201d Boone said before Tuesday\u2019s game against the Chicago White Sox at Yankee Stadium.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome might interpret looking up as not being alert. So making sure that he\u2019s looking up with plenty of time to be alert by eight seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caballero spent several minutes arguing with home plate umpire Steven Jaschinski over his insistence on waiting until the pitch clock struck eight seconds to engage with the pitcher in the sixth inning of the Yankees\u2019 8-3 win Sunday in Toronto. Jaschinski even issued Caballero an \u201cintentional delay\u201d warning over the team\u2019s public address system.<\/p>\n

MLB first instituted the pitch clock in 2023, and ever since, hitters have had until the eight-second mark to acknowledge the pitcher. If the hitter doesn\u2019t do it, the umpire is supposed to penalize him with a strike. The pitch clock is 15 seconds per pitch with the bases empty and 18 seconds with runners on base.<\/p>\n

Despite the new guidance, Caballero reiterated Tuesday that he still doesn\u2019t understand why Jaschinski and other umpires have had a problem with him waiting until the eight-second mark to pick up his head and acknowledge the pitcher.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just need clarification on it,\u201d Caballero said. \u201cRegardless of what the rule will be, I will wait until eight or nine seconds to be alert. I am not going to give my at-bat to the pitcher to determine if he is going to control my timing or not. I\u2019m going to wait all the way until my time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caballero said he planned to have a conversation with Tuesday\u2019s plate umpire, Mike Muchlinski, before his at-bat to make sure he\u2019s on the same page with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have been changing the rule every single day,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m hoping the conversation isn\u2019t needed,\u201d Boone said.<\/p>\n

White Sox manager Will Venable said he doesn\u2019t believe his pitchers will have a problem with Caballero\u2019s antics. Venable said Chicago will be ready for them, and \u201cit\u2019s a good tactic, honestly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something that we talk about in our advance meeting so our guys aren\u2019t surprised,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s in the report.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s disruptive. People seem to have a problem with it, which I don\u2019t understand. If you\u2019re prepared for that, it shouldn\u2019t be an issue. It\u2019s in the rules. He\u2019s playing his game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caballero said that he doesn\u2019t want the pitcher to use the full pitch clock against him and make him wait an exceedingly long time to deliver a pitch.<\/p>\n

Yankees hitting coach James Rowson said he believes Caballero\u2019s tactics also help the Yankees on the bases.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look at it from a base-stealing standpoint,\u201d Rowson said, \u201cyou can\u2019t freeze base runners. If you have a runner on first, all of a sudden, you can\u2019t sit there and freeze base runners for 15 seconds. There\u2019s something to stopping a guy\u2019s momentum offensively, whether it\u2019s being stuck in the box or stuck on the bases. There\u2019s an advantage for the defensive side of the ball. I think the way he goes about it lessens that advantage and it\u2019s not outside of the rules.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caballero said pitchers seem to only have a problem with what he\u2019s doing when there are runners on base.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the pitcher doesn\u2019t mess up,\u201d he said, \u201cnothing happens. But when the pitcher messed up and there is traffic on the bases or they are rushing or they\u2019re nervous or I don\u2019t know what it is, and that\u2019s when they mess up, and then it\u2019s my fault? How is that my fault? I do the same thing over and over and over again. Go watch all of my at-bats this year. I do the same thing. Once the clock goes all the way to 13, I do my routine, I put my head up (at eight seconds), and now that\u2019s an issue? I don\u2019t get it.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
