The property, recently listed for sale, was recommended for purchase in the first PONC report completed in 2006.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe purchase of Honolulu Landing through the PONC program will preserve this land in perpetuity, ensuring that we protect natural and cultural sites and ocean access along the Puna coast,\u201d Mayor Kimo Alameda said today in a press release. \u201cI want to thank the community members who tirelessly advocated for preserving this land for the benefit of the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The acquisition marks the Alameda administration\u2019s fourth PONC purchase in the last 18 months and follows a successful County Council resolution advanced by Councilwoman Ashley Kierkiewicz.<\/p>\n<p>According to the resolution, the property is located between the old coastal village of Waiakahi\u02bbula and the Nanawale Forest Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>A 2004 survey at Honolulu Landing documented ancient burial sites, village complexes, heiau, house platforms, rock walls, ahu and planting areas at the property.<\/p>\n<p>Natural resources include freshwater springs, groves of hala, kukui and hau trees, and habitats for endangered native species such as the \u02bbio (Hawaiian hawk), \u02bbope\u02bbape\u02bba (Hawaiian hoary bat) and pueo (Hawaiian owl).<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/movingtohawaiiguide.com\/?p=88\">Permit granted for Falls on Fire festival in Papaikou<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe worked with then-council member (Emily) Naeole in 2006 to place Honolulu Landing on the very first PONC list and, on behalf of the lineal descendants of Honolulu Landing, we extend our deepest gratitude to Mayor Kimo Alameda, and to council member Ashley Kierkiewicz, for their leadership and commitment in advancing this resolution to its successful outcome,\u201d Eileen O\u2019Hara, executive director of Malama O Puna, said in the press release.<\/p>\n<p>Lineal descendant Lehua Kaulukukui added, \u201cHonolulu Landing holds the legacy of our Tutu, Mary Kaui Moke Kuamo\u02bbo Keli\u02bbipio, and generations of \u02bbohana before her who lived in deep alignment with this \u02bbaina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs stewards of this legacy, our Keli\u02bbipio-Kuamo\u02bbo Foundation is committed to broadening awareness and deepening community engagement within this treasured ahupua\u02bba,\u201d Lilinoe Keli\u02bbipio Young said in the release. \u201cWe will work to uplift and reintroduce traditional practices of m\u0101lama \u02bbaina \u2014 rooted in balance, reciprocity, and sustainability \u2014 as lived by our ancestors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Funding for PONC is supported by an annual 2% contribution from the County\u2019s property tax revenues.<\/p>\n<p>Under PONC, the county may acquire properties to preserve historically or culturally important sites, protect natural resources, and provide opportunities for public outdoor recreation and education, including access to beaches and mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Properties are nominated each year by the public, reviewed and ranked by the commission, and recommended by the mayor.
