Hilo man dies after beating; murder investigation opened
Hawaii Island police have initiated a murder investigation following an assault near Hilo International Airport more than a week ago that left a 57-year-old Hilo man dead.

At 5:11 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, South Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of an affray involving several individuals assaulting a man in the 100 block of Operations St.
Responding officers located an unconscious man who had been assaulted.
The victim, later identified as 57-year-old Michael Alan Torres Jr. of Hilo, was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center for treatment of serious head injuries and was later flown to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for further treatment.

Torres died at 3:39 a.m. Thursday, May 14, at The Queen’s.
The case is being investigated as a second-degree murder.
