KAILUA-KONA — With the FIFA World Cup in full swing and excitement scattered across Hawaii, local soccer fans will have a unique opportunity to watch the month-long tournament right along Kona’s turquoise waters.
Kona Canoe Club on Ali‘i Drive — in conjunction with Hawaii Restaurant Group — will be hosting watch parties for every tournament match through July 18, including most morning matches. The viewing experiences will entail music, flat-screens and a new breakfast menu featuring World Cup-inspired cocktails.
“It didn’t seem like there’s a lot of World Cup energy on the island, but we also know that there’s a lot of soccer fans and a lot of people that have shown interest,” Hawaii Restaurant Group Head of Marketing William Schulhof told the paper. “So we wanted to have a place by the water where we could set up all of the flags and create this place where we can have a World Cup viewing.
“We created a breakfast menu that is quite good and has a bunch of different options. We’re hoping to just get a lot of people in there — this is a place where you can get a beer, grab breakfast or just show up and watch the games on the new TVs.”
Some of the new breakfast items entail papaya sunrise bowls, island breakfast fried rice, coconut french toast and breakfast burritos with applewood bacon, Portuguese sausage, potatoes, garlic fried rice, eggs any style and avocado as sides.

There will also be weekly prize giveaways that include giftcards, jerseys and even two tickets to the June 26 Group G stage match between Egypt and Iran in Seattle.
“We’re trying to market it to soccer fans,” Schulhof said. “We were thinking Seattle is more convenient for fans to travel to than flying to the East Coast. We’re hoping fans are able to go and enjoy the experience, but the winner is allowed to do whatever they’d like with the tickets.”
To enter the sweepstakes for prizes, contestants must follow Kona Canoe Club on Instagram (@konacanoeclub), share the contest post on their story, tag three friends and let their server know they attended the restaurant for a match.
