HILO — Kamehameha-Hawaii football continued its dominant stretch on Friday at Wong Stadium.

Thanks to an efficient five-touchdown performance from sophomore quarterback Kahekili Makekau, the Warriors handled the hosting Hilo Vikings in shutout fashion — winning in a 54-0 rout. The victory was marked as KSH’s most dominant win of the season to date.

The Warriors (4-1 overall, 3-0 BIIF) stayed unbeaten in Big Island play, and scored at least 50 points for the second straight week.

Makekau threw his five touchdown passes on just six attempts for 213 yards, finding Chaseton Wong twice, Cole Walker, Chanse Kaaua-Long and Iokua Toci-Hookano for long scores. Wong led the receiver room with 91 receiving yards, adding to his near-500-yard, six-touchdown season.

Makekau has a perfect 14-0 touchdown-to-interception ratio through five games, leading a prolific offense that is averaging nearly 40 a night.

KSH running back Dallas Enriquez was steady and reliable as usual, scampering for 81 yards on eight carries for a touchdown. The junior has tallied 474 yards and seven touchdowns thus far, leading a backfield that is running for an average of nearly 120 yards.

Backup quarterback Lekahi Coloma saw action near the end of regulation, rushing for a 22-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Defensively, Josiah Shaver returned an interception 34 yards for a pick six in the third quarter.

The Warriors allow under 17 points per game.

Riding a wave that will be hard to come down from, KSH will try to keep the winning going with its next game against Kea‘au on Friday at home.

It will be the first of two matchups between the Kea‘au-based schools this season. The Warriors and Cougars met on the gridiron twice a year ago, with Kea‘au winning both times.

Hilo (2-2 overall, 2-1 BIIF) will look to get back in the win column after shutting out Kealakehe and routing Kea‘au. They’ll be tasked against west-side powerhouse Konawaena on Friday at Wong.

The Vikings average 21 points per game.

Wildcats post another shutout

No. 13 Konawaena football picked up right where it left off during Friday’s matchup against Kea’au.

After shutting out Kealakehe a week earlier, the Wildcats hosted the Cougars for their homecoming game, routing the guests in quick fashion — 61-0 — which included a 40-point half.

Kona’s skill, home field advantage and experience edge over Kea’au overwhelmed the Cougars from the opening kick.

The green and white scored over 60 for the second straight week, out-scoring opponents 124-0 in that span.

While the home team dominated the scoreboard, the young Cougars competed plenty early — advancing downfield on multiple occasions thanks to the arm of quarterback Cashez Kenui and the elusiveness of Asheley Stone. However, the team’s youth and inexperience showed up the red zone.

“We came out the gate a little flat, and they put together a few good drives, which was a good test for us in terms of making adjustments,” Kona head coach Brad Uemoto said postgame. “I thought they were a pretty good team for being young. They’re only going to get better, they’re not pushovers.”

The night started with Wildcats quarterback Keenan Alani connecting with senior Anakin Punihaole for a catch-and-run score over the middle, putting the hosts on the board first. Just a few minutes later, senior Aycen Blanco blocked Kea’au’s punt and landed on the ball in the Cougars’ end zone — giving Kona six more points.

The Wildcats’ next scoring drive featured Alani connecting with Josiah Nihoa, who was slippery after the catch to bring his team to midfield. Alani then found sophomore Ka’el Johnson for two more completions, with one of them being his second touchdown pass of the evening.

Freshman standout Kailewa Silva-Kealoha, who finished with a strong performance on both sides of the ball against Kealakehe the previous week, made his first highlight play of the night by picking off Kea’au quarterback Kenui during a strong Cougars’ drive. He picked Kenui off again right at the end of the half.

The Wildcats kept riding the momentum with strong runs from sophomore halfback Shayden Domingo, who used his sheer will to break through Kea’au’s defensive front. Once Kona was deep into Cougar territory, Silva-Kealoha carried the ball into the end zone for another touchdown.

On the ensuing drive, junior Wildcat Zeke Palu recovered a Kea’au fumble, giving his team prime field position. Alani soon found Johnson again for a touchdown pass.

Just before halftime, Alani threw another dime to senior Dylan Nakashima in the far-left corner of the end zone for six more points.

“I think our guys are starting to settle into their spots a little bit,” Uemoto said of Kona’s offense, which features a deep receiving core. “Just trying to find the right rotation at our receiver position, and get (Alani) used to different receivers rolling in all the time. I think they understand that some nights, guys are going to have bigger games than others.

“And also finding a formula on offense where we can get those two-way guys off the field a little bit and give them a breather.”

The second half started with Josiah Nihoa returning Kea‘au’s opening kick to the end zone, which essentially sealed the deal. The Wildcats then played several second and third stringers for the remainder of the night, including backup quarterback Hazyn Lopes, who threw a touchdown to junior Brock Smith in the fourth quarter.

The final touchdown of the night went to Domingo, who powered himself through a number of Cougars to reach the left pylon.

Kona (3-1 overall, 2-1 BIIF) next heads on a road trip to the other side of the island, set to play Hilo on Friday at Wong Stadium for the Wildcats’ second road game of the conference schedule. The Wildcats went 2-0 against the Vikings in 2025.

“We’re gonna turn on some film (on Hilo) this week and scheme for them,” Uemoto said. “They’re always gonna be a good team. They always play us well. It’s going to be a good road challenge for us — getting on the bus and being able to turn on the switch and play football. Hopefully, we have a good week of practice.”

Kea‘au (0-5 overall) will regroup for another tough challenge against No. 12 KSH on Friday on the road.

Dragons dominate home opener

Honoka‘a football routed another BIIF Division-I opponent over the weekend.

Taking on the visiting Waiakea Warriors, the Dragons handled business quickly, winning 45-8 to improve to a perfect 4-0 record. Honoka‘a remained atop of the BIIF-DII standings after a multi-week break from competition.

Some Dragon highlights included multiple touchdown passes from freshman Waimaka Stender — one 30-yard bomb to Hau‘oli McGurn and a 23-yard laser to Kaenan Martines. Hapaki Moniz picked off a Waiakea pass and returned it 65 yards for a pick six. Running back Chrys Coelho rushed for a 30-yard score, while Austin Vincent found the end zone off a 26-yard run.

Through four games, Honoka‘a has boasted one of the most electric offenses in the state, averaging nearly 37 points per game while allowing less than six.

The Dragons will next be tested this weekend in Waimea, taking on Hawaii Prep on Saturday afternoon on the road. The game will be the first of two matchups between the two DII programs this season.

The Warriors (2-3 overall, 2-2 BIIF) have lost three straight, and will try to find their footing against Kealakehe on Saturday in Hilo.
