Crack on runway leads to emergency closure at Kona airport

The state Department of Transportation briefly suspended air operations at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole at 1:35 p.m. today “to address a crack discovered on the runway.”

Crews patched the crack, and the runway reopened at about 3 p.m.

DOT said crews will do a “permanent repair” from 11:30 p.m. tonight to 5 a.m. Friday.

Approximately six flights were inbound to the Kona airport at the time the crack was discovered, according to DOT.

Three flights were diverted to Kahului Airport on Maui and will be rerouted.
