Thai restaurant in Kona shut down by state due to ‘rodent infestation’
Baan Thai Family Cuisine in Kailua-Kona has been shut down by the state Department of Health due to a “rodent infestation and multiple critical food safety violations.”
The restaurant — located at 75-5744 Aliʻi Drive and operated by Miyavadee Khamya — received a red placard on Wednesday and must remain closed until the DOH conducts a follow-up inspection and all critical violations are resolved.
During a routine inspection, the DOH inspector observed the following violations: “an abundant amount” of rodent feces throughout the restaurant, including on food-contact surfaces and nonfood-contact surfaces; visible points of entry for unwanted pests; food was not stored to prevent contamination; potentially hazardous foods were not maintained at proper temperature; hand-washing sinks were not equipped with soap; and other offenses.

The DOH is requiring the food establishment to take the multiple corrective actions before it can reopen, including discarding all contaminated food products and having a professional pest control operator service the establishment and submit a report to the DOH.
