Leo Rivas singled home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Chicago Cubs 6-5 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game interleague series.

Cal Raleigh hit a three-run homer for the Mariners, who won for the fourth time in their past six games.

Alex Bregman homered twice and Pete Crow-Armstrong and Ian Happ also went deep for the Cubs. Bregman’s solo shot with one out in the top of the ninth off Mariners closer Andres Munoz tied the score at 5-all.

The Cubs suffered their second straight defeat but still have a five-game cushion atop the National League’s wild-card standings.

Mariners reliever Seranthy Dominguez (5-3) pitched a scoreless top of the 10th, with the Cubs’ Ryan Zeferjahn (4-4) taking the loss.

With Randy Arozarena the runner at second to start the bottom of the 10th, Victor Robles put down a successful sacrifice bunt. Zeferjahn got Julio Rodriguez to bounce back to the mound and walked Josh Naylor intentionally to bring up the light-hitting Rivas, who entered as a pinch runner for Taylor Ward in the eighth. Rivas lined an 0-1 sweeper into center field to score Arozarena from third.

The Cubs took a 3-0 lead off Mariners right-hander Emerson Hancock in the first. Crow-Armstrong led off with a towering blast to right-center. With one out, Michael Busch doubled and Bregman followed with a two-run shot down the left field line.

The Mariners answered in the second. Naylor grounded a one-out single to center and Ward walked. Raleigh followed with a three-run blast to deep left-center off Cubs lefty Matthew Boyd. Cole Young singled and advanced to second on Brock Rodden’s flyout to deep left. Brendan Donovan lined a single to right, with Young scoring the go-ahead run.

The Mariners tacked on an unearned run in the fifth. Rodden reached on a throwing error by shortstop Nico Hoerner and advanced to second on a balk. Arozarena’s bloop single to shallow center scored Rodden to make it 5-3.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell was ejected by home-plate umpire Brennan Miller between the fifth and sixth innings for arguing the balk call.

Happ went deep off reliever Eduard Bazardo leading off the eighth to pull the Cubs within 5-4.

Hancock went 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits, with no walks and six strikeouts.

Willson Contreras’ HR fuels Red Sox’s big inning in
win over Giants

Willson Contreras crushed a three-run home run to highlight a five-run third inning and Wilyer Abreu went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple for the Boston Red Sox in a 6-4 win over Rafael Devers and the visiting San Francisco Giants on Friday.

Ceddanne Rafaela and Jarren Duran also had multi-hit games for the Red Sox, who banged out 11 hits in the opener of a three-game series. Boston pitchers allowed only one baserunner over the final 5 1/3 hitless innings, helping the team post its third win in four games.

Red Sox starter Sonny Gray (16-3) worked six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out six and walked two while tying the Philadelphia Phillies’ Cristopher Sanchez for the major league lead in wins.

San Francisco’s Drew Gilbert (2-for-3) and Devers hit back-to-back homers in the fourth.

Devers finished 1-for-3 with a walk in his return to Boston, where he spent the first eight-plus seasons of his career.

Christian Koss produced two hits and two runs for the Giants, who have lost four of their past five games. Logan Webb (8-8) was tagged for five runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings. He fanned two and walked three.

Bryce Eldridge’s two-out RBI single gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but the Red Sox immediately responded by chasing Webb during their big inning.

Nick Sogard walked before Abreu’s two-out single two batters later set the stage for Contreras to blast a titanic three-run home run to deep left field. The first baseman crushed it 450 feet over the Green Monster.

The line continued moving with Adley Rutschman and Caleb Durbin knocking back-to-back singles before Duran was hit by a pitch. Two runs came in with the bases loaded as Webb walked Andruw Monasterio and plunked Mickey Gasper.

The Giants climbed right back into the game at 5-4 in the fourth. Gray struck out two before Koss doubled and Gilbert sent a two-run homer into the right field corner. Devers then cleared the fence in straightaway center field.

Gray breezed through the next two innings on a combined 16 pitches.

Abreu provided the Red Sox with insurance in the sixth, ringing a two-out RBI triple over right fielder Jung Hoo Lee’s head and all the way to the warning track. Sogard, who had singled, scored from first.

Jordan Lawlar’s career-best game powers D-backs
in rout of Reds

Jordan Lawlar homered and posted career highs with three hits and three RBIs as the Arizona Diamondbacks struck early to beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-0 on Friday in Phoenix.

Geraldo Perdomo had three hits, scored twice and had an RBI for the D-backs, and Gabriel Moreno had two hits and an RBI while extending his career-best hitting streak to 14 games. Corbin Carroll had two hits, scored twice and stole a base on his 26th birthday, and Tim Tawa added two hits and an RBI.

Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez (13-4) gave up four hits, all singles, in 5 2/3 innings while striking out four and walking two. He won his third straight start and improved to 6-1 since July 10.

Rodriguez left when his pitch count reached 99 after issuing a two-out walk to Eugenio Suarez in the sixth, finishing one out short of his 17th quality start.

The D-backs, who played their fourth game without injured Ketel Marte, have won two in a row. Cincinnati took its sixth loss in eight games.

Cincinnati’s TJ Friedl broke an 0-for-30 skid with a fifth-inning single and was later hit by a pitch. He entered in the first inning after left fielder Michael Toglia dislocated his right shoulder making a diving catch on Perdomo’s liner. Cincinnati left-hander Nick Lodolo (3-2) gave up 10 hits and six runs in 3 1/3 innings. He issued two walks and fanned two.

The D-backs scored in each of the first four innings, and they stole four bases in the first two innings off Lodolo, with three of those runners scoring.

Carroll walked, stole second and came home on Moreno’s single in the first.

Tawa singled, stole second and came around on Lawlar’s second homer of the season in the D-backs’ three-run second. Jose Fernandez singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Ildemaro Vargas’ sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.
