State Sen. Joy San Buenaventura said she beefed up security for a campaign event last Saturday after a Facebook post called her a “child abusing domestic terrorist” and advocated she be convicted of treason and “hung by the neck until she is dead then sent to hell where she spawned from.”

“Anyone who votes for her or supports her should get the same treatment. Flat Out,” the post dated July 16 by Daniel Robinson concluded.

The post included an image of a postcard San Buenaventura said she mailed to 16,000 constituents for the free event at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie in Keaau.

San Buenaventura said she was notified about the post by County Council member Matt Kaneali‘i-Kleinfelder but decided to proceed with the event — which included a band, a food truck and a no-host bar.

For security, she engaged the Men of Pa‘a, a group of Hawaiian men dedicated to community service and positive action.

“(Robinson) obviously had a copy of my postcard. Otherwise, it would not have made the post. That’s what concerned me,” San Buenaventura told the Tribune-Herald on Monday. “Another concern was that the post was shared, which would increase the threat of violence.

“Being told about the threat a few days in advance, I chose the side of caution. Even though I didn’t think the risk was that big, people needed to be informed about the situation.”

And although the postcard stated that attendance and parking was at one’s own risk, San Buenaventura said that line had nothing to do with the Facebook post.

“Actually, that was made before because 16,000 postcards went out, and Eagles doesn’t have the capacity to hold 16,000,” she said.

According to San Buenaventura, she has reported Robinson’s post — which she described as threatening — to the Hawaii Police Department, the state attorney general and the FBI.

Robinson, who is apparently not in the U.S., has since at least October has targeted online — in addition to San Buenaventura — Gov. Josh Green, U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono, and District Family Court judges Joanna Sokolow of Hawaii Island and Robert Brown of Oahu, officials he described as “corrupt and destroying our country.”

“By the Grace of God and God alone I am going to socially engineer the end your careers and get you sent to prison,” Robinson wrote about the five.

Robinson, who lost a child custody battle in a 2022 divorce, said in a Monday post he suffers from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

“If my ex wife is not held accountable and my kids returned to me God will use me to continue this quest,” Robinson wrote. “And it will not end well for those who have sinned against God and the innocent and women and children and disabled people like me.”

San Buenaventura said she’s known about Robinson since October, when she was contacted by the FBI about the posts naming her and the others.

San Buenaventura added that she receives emails which include him from a group called Hawaii Coalition for Child Protective Reform.

“I don’t know why he’s targeting me. The group emails me, because I’m chair of Health and Human Services, with these mass emails requesting, I guess, bills be passed to reform child abuse laws. He said his kids were taken from him because of (Child Welfare Services).”

“What is ironic is even though he claims to be aligned with this group, I have championed due-process reforms this group claims to advocate,” San Buenaventura said.

San Buenaventura, a Democrat who represents Senate District 2, is seeking reelection. She has a primary opponent in Tanya Yamanaka Aynassazian, while perennial candidate Fred Fogel is running as a Libertarian.

“Prior to all of this, I was expecting about 250 or 300 — possibly more, coming and going, based on the capacity of the parking we had secured in the area. That’s what I was expecting. What showed up was about half that amount,” San Buenaventura said. “There were the people who showed up to talk to me about the issues affecting Puna and left. And really, that’s what the forum was all about. And I gave them the ability to do that. They got to talk to me and other candidates, as well.”

Those candidates include: Rep. Della Au Bellati, an Oahu Democrat running for lieutenant governor; Shannon Matson, running for County Council District 5; and Eileen O’Hara, Smiley Burrows and Cyd Hoffeld, all running for County Council District 4.

Robinson posted Monday that he is “more than 6,000 miles away on a different continent.”

“How is it possible that I could possibly physically hurt her. I can’t,” he wrote. “But her threatening me with the police for exercising my 1st Amendment rights is a threat.”
