Luis Rengifo hit a tie-breaking pinch-hit two-run homer in the eighth inning and the visiting San Diego Padres held on for a 4-2 win against the Miami Marlins in the opener of their three-game series on Friday night.

Miami reliever Tyler Zuber (0-1) came back out for the eighth, and Ty France greeted him with an opposite-field double into the right-center field gap. After getting a strikeout, Zuber left a sweeper over the plate to Rengifo, who lifted it over the fence in right for a two-run homer and a 4-2 lead.

Manny Machado had two hits, an RBI and run scored and France also delivered a pair of hits for the Padres, who avoided falling a season-low four games under .500.

Padres starter German Marquez was lifted after just 2 1/3 innings and 37 pitches. He gave up one run and three hits, striking out four without a walk.

Five relievers followed, with Adrian Morejon (8-2) earning the win and Mason Miller securing his 26th save.

Joe Mack and Heriberto Hernandez homered and Xavier Edwards contributed two hits for Miami, which has lost 10 in a row.

Marlins starter Ryan Gusto went 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run and two hits, striking out four and walking one.

After the Marlins stranded the bases full in the first inning, Mack came up with two outs in the second and the rookie catcher pulled an inside fastball over the fence in right for his 10th home run of the season and a 1-0 lead.

Machado and France had back-to-back one-out singles in the fourth to put runners on the corners and end Gusto’s day. Cade Gibson entered and gave up a sacrifice fly to Jackson Merrill that tied the score 1-1.

Xander Bogaerts drew a four-pitch walk off Gibson to start the fifth. After he was bunted over to second, Michael Petersen came out of the bullpen and surrendered a two-out RBI single to left by Machado to score Bogaerts for a 2-1 lead.

Wandy Peralta replaced fellow San Diego left-hander Kyle Hart with one out in the fifth and Hernandez lined his first pitch over the fence in center to tie it at 2.

Roki Sasaki fires 7 strong innings as Dodgers down Mets

Roki Sasaki struck out nine and allowed just one run over seven innings, earning his first win in two months as the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Mets 4-2 on Friday.

Kyle Tucker went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the eighth that gave the Dodgers some breathing room. Freddie Freeman finished 3-for-4, scoring twice, and Shohei Ohtani (2-for-4) hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh that put Los Angeles on top for the first time.

Luis Robert Jr. hit a solo homer off Sasaki (4-5) in the second inning for the Mets, who collected only four hits. Francisco Alvarez added a solo shot off Evan Phillips in the eighth.

Los Angeles’ Tanner Scott pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 16th save.

Most of the game was a pitchers’ duel between two starters with ERAs higher than 4.70. Sasaki matched his season high by going seven innings for the third time. The right-hander’s nine strikeouts were his second-highest total in 2026.

Sasaki permitted three hits, walked two and retired the last nine batters he faced.

Sasaki needed to be sharp as Sean Manaea gave up just a run over six innings while fanning three. The Dodgers got leadoff hits in five of those innings, but the Mets left-hander, who allowed six hits and two walks, benefited from a couple big throws by Carson Benge.

The Mets right fielder cut down Ohtani trying to extend a leadoff double into a triple in the fifth. An inning later, after catching a Miguel Rojas fly ball, he got Freeman on a one-hop throw to the plate to secure an inning-ending double play.

Los Angeles took the lead with some soft contact off Brooks Raley (4-5), who took over for Manaea in the seventh. Tucker led off with an infield single and took third on a bloop hit by Teoscar Hernandez (2-for-4).

Dalton Rushing tried a safety squeeze, but the Mets caught Tucker in a rundown. Tucker avoided being tagged long enough to let Hernandez and Rushing take second and third, respectively, allowing Ohtani to give the Dodgers the lead with his subsequent fly ball to center.

New York’s Juan Soto left in the sixth inning because of a sore left calf, the same issue that prompted the Mets to give him the day off Wednesday. After the game, the team announced that Soto would undergo imaging Saturday on his calf.

Jake Burger homers, drives in 3 as Rangers defeat Mariners

Jake Burger hit a two-run homer and added a tiebreaking single as the Texas Rangers defeated the visiting Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Friday in the opener of a four-game series.

Wyatt Langford also went deep for Texas, which moved 1 1/2 games ahead of the defending division champion Mariners in the American League West.

Peyton Gray (5-0) pitched a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts to earn the victory. All-Star Jacob Latz worked the ninth for his 20th save despite allowing a run on a double by rookie Colt Emerson, a groundout and a wild pitch.

Texas broke a 3-all tie in the sixth. Brandon Nimmo lined a one-out single to right, and Evan Carter walked. That was it for Mariners starter Bryce Miller (4-5), who was replaced by Eduard Bazardo.

Burger grounded the reliever’s first pitch for a run-scoring single to center, with Carter advancing to third on the play. Nicky Lopez then dropped down a sacrifice bunt, with Bazardo’s underhanded toss going off the end of catcher Cal Raleigh’s mitt as Carter came home.

Elias Diaz lined a single to right, loading the bases, before Bazardo struck out Alejandro Osuna and got Joc Pederson to foul out down the third base line.

Miller was charged with five runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings as the native of nearby Mount Pleasant, Texas, dropped to 0-4 in six career starts against the Rangers. The right-hander walked one and didn’t strike out a batter.

The Rangers took an early lead as Langford homered with one out in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-1 splitter from Miller just over the fence in left.

Seattle tied it in the second. Josh Naylor drew a one-out walk and took second as Cole Young grounded a single into right field. With two outs, Weston Wilson lined a run-scoring single to right to make it 1-1.

The Rangers regained the lead with two runs in the fourth. Ezequiel Duran led off by lining a single to left. Two outs later, Burger went deep to right on an 0-2 fastball.

The Mariners again rallied to tie it in the next inning. Emerson and Randy Arozarena began the frame with singles to right. An out later, Dominic Canzone lined a two-run double to left-center that just got between the outfielders and rolled to the wall.

Rangers starter MacKenzie Gore gave up three runs on seven hits over five innings. The left-hander walked two and fanned five.

Jacob Lopez, four relievers shut down Twins in Athletics’ win

Left-hander Jacob Lopez and four relievers combined to toss a two-hit shutout as the Athletics held on for a 2-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night in Minneapolis.

Lawrence Butler and Tyler Soderstrom drove in one run apiece for the Athletics, who won the opener of a three-game series. The Athletics snapped a two-game skid.

Austin Martin doubled and Ryan Jeffers singled for Minnesota’s only hits.

Lopez (5-4) was dominant from the start. He allowed one hit, walked four and struck out four in five scoreless innings.

Right-hander Geoff Hartlieb, left-hander Jose Suarez and right-hander Elvis Alvarado teamed up to keep the Twins scoreless in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Athletics left-hander Hogan Harris finished the job with a scoreless ninth inning to collect his eighth save of the season.

Twins right-hander Zebby Matthews (4-8) took the loss despite registering a quality start. He allowed two runs on three hits in six innings, walking three and striking out one.

The Athletics broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth.

Donovan Walton drew a one-out walk and advanced to third base on a double by Tommy White. Two batters later, Butler hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Walton and make it 1-0.

The Athletics added another run in the sixth.

Henry Bolte started the action this time with a leadoff infield single. Jacob Wilson grounded out in the next at-bat but Bolte advanced safely to second. Soderstrom then gave the Athletics a 2-0 lead with an RBI single to left to drive in Bolte.

The Twins squandered an opportunity to generate some runs in the bottom of the sixth. Minnesota loaded the bases with one out for Brooks Lee, but Suarez escaped the jam by getting Lee to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The Twins swiped three bases in the loss. Royce Lewis stole two bases and Luke Keaschall stole one.
