A Hilo grand jury returned a 19-court indictment last week on a 32-year-old Puna man accused of raping a 27-year-old woman late last month in Puna.

Joseph Kekedi, who was previously charged by complaint, is charged with two counts each of second-degree sexual assault, plus domestic abuse aggravated by strangulation, three counts of domestic abuse, reckless endangering, possessing an automatic firearm, and nine additional firearms offenses.

Kekedi pleaded not guilty Tuesday, and Hilo Circuit Judge Henry Nakamoto denied his request for supervised release — a form of cashless bail. The judge maintained Kekedi’s bail at $472,000 and ordered him to return to court for “further proceedings” on Nov. 10.

According to police reports, Kekedi was arrested on Aug. 28, after officers responded to a domestic incident involving a firearm. Following the execution of a residential search warrant, police recovered five firearms, including a DPMS AR-15 style rifle, a Sturm Ruger .223 caliber rifle, a Titan Tiger .38 caliber revolver, and Remington and Winchester 12-gauge shotguns.

The most serious offense, second-degree sexual assault, is a Class B felony that carries a maximum penalty of a 10-year prison term.
