The state Department of Transportation is continuing to make safety improvements on Daniel K. Inouye Highway, also known as Saddle Road, following several recent traffic fatalities.

As part of the immediate safety improvements being undertaken, DOT is repaving DKI Highway between mile-posts 10 and 22.5 with open-graded friction course, or OGFC, to increase the pavement drainage capability and reduce the likelihood of vehicles hydroplaning.

Crews are currently working at the 16.5 mile-post to install OGFC paving in the uphill direction toward the west side. Paving will continue between mile-post 16 to 19.5 for another 10 days.

Completion is estimated to be in the last week of July.

Paving at the curve at mile-post 22 and mile-post 13.5 will take another 10 days. Completion is estimated to be in the third week of August.

Striping from mile-post 5.5 to 28 will take another 30 days. “This will include installing thermoplastic striping with enhanced glass beading that is more visible, especially in wet weather, as well as raised rumble striping. Temporary glass bead paint is being used with raised pavement markers for the interim until the permanent striping is installed,” according to DOT.

The projected completion date is October.

DOT has also installed chevron signs on the curves, as well as other signage, to notify drivers of bends and changes in road direction. Additional signs will be installed.
