Vaughn Grissom hit a solo home run and sacrifice fly and Grayson Rodriguez threw 5 1/3 solid innings to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night in Minneapolis.

Grissom hit his fifth home run of the season in the fourth inning, and the Angels built a 4-1 lead and held on after Rodriguez (3-2) left the game having allowed three earned runs on six hits.

Rodriguez had been on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Salt Lake, working his way back to the majors from a lower back injury.

The Angels’ bullpen delivered 3 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, including the ninth inning from Kirby Yates for his third save.

Josh Bell, Trevor Larnach and Brooks Lee each hit two doubles for Minnesota, which went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

The Twins scored first on a Kody Clemens sacrifice fly in the first. Grissom tied the game by leading off the fourth with a homer to left, then Jorge Soler came home on a balk.

Grissom hit a first-pitch fastball from the Twins’ Zebby Matthews out to left field, the ninth home run Matthews has allowed in his last six appearances.

The Angels made it 3-1 when Nolan Schanuel singled in Wade Meckler in the top of the fifth inning, and Grissom’s sacrifice fly scored Tyler Heineman from third base for a 4-1 lead.

Matthews (4-6) allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings.

Ryan Jeffers was activated from the injured list for Minnesota and was Friday’s catcher. He’d been out since mid-May with a broken hamate bone in his left hand. Jeffers went 1-for-4 in his return game.

Minnesota came up with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on Lee’s double to drive in Bell, then a groundout for pinch hitter Austin Martin to bring in another run.

Tampa Bay starter Nick Martinez posted his eighth win on the day he was named to his first All-Star team, and the Rays opened the final series before the break with a 7-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The 35-year-old right-hander replaced injured Boston Red Sox pitcher Ranger Suarez on the American League squad for Tuesday’s game, then went out and tossed 5 1/3 innings, yielding two runs on four hits. Martinez (8-2) fanned one and walked one.

Junior Caminero went 2-for-4 with a homer — his 28th of the year and 13th in 17 games — a double, two RBIs, two runs and a walk.

Victor Mesa Jr. (homer), Jonathan Aranda (double) and Chandler Simpson had three hits apiece, while Richie Palacios and Cedric Mullins each went deep.

Cole Young hit a home run, and J.P. Crawford was 2-for-4 with a run as Seattle lost its fourth straight.

Starter Luis Castillo (3-8) allowed four runs on nine hits over five innings. He struck out four with one walk.

After leaving four men on base in the first two frames, the home side cashed in after Caminero lashed a double into the left field corner. Following his advancing to third, Simpson grounded a single through Castillo’s legs and off the second base bag to make it 1-0 in the third.

Tampa Bay shortstop Taylor Walls saved a run in the fourth after Crawford’s leadoff double. With one out, Walls made a diving snag of Dominic Canzone’s grounder at the edge of the outfield and tossed him out, preventing Crawford from scoring. Martinez then whiffed Cal Raleigh.

Palacios jumped on a 94 mph four-seam fastball from Castillo in the bottom of the fourth, belting it out to right for his third homer to double the lead.

However, Young ripped his 11th shot on a 1-2 changeup well below the zone to make it 2-1 in the fifth.

Mullins continued the home run barrage by swatting Castillo’s slider to right for his 11th long ball, and Mesa tagged another slider to right for a 4-1 advantage.

After Canzone’s RBI fielder’s choice cut it to 4-2 in the sixth, Tampa Bay scored three times in the seventh on Caminero’s two-run slice shot down the right field line and Walls’ sacrifice fly.

Chisholm Jr.’s 2-run homer in 9th lifts Yankees past Nationals

Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-run ninth-inning homer and the New York Yankees rallied past the Nationals 5-3 in Washington on Friday night.

With New York trailing 3-2, Jasson Dominguez singled with one out against Matt Krook (0-1) and Chisholm homered into the second deck in right, his 13th of the season. Austin Wells provided some insurance when he homered off Justin Lawrence with two outs.

Keibert Ruiz and James Wood hit back-to-back solo home runs in the seventh to give Washington a 3-2 lead.

Ben Rice hit his third homer in two games for New York and Dominguez also homered.

David Bednar (3-3) pitched the final two innings for the win.

Wood finished a triple short of the cycle and scored twice.

The start of the game was delayed two hours by rain, and Rice gave the Yankees a quick 1-0 lead when he lined a 2-2 pitch the opposite way for a solo homer in the first. One out later, Paul Goldschmidt snapped an 0-for-34 skid with a single and Cody Bellinger singled, but Dominguez struck out.

Washington tied it in the third. Wood led off with a double, went to third on Curtis Mead’s single and scored when Dylan Crews grounded into a double play.

Bellinger singled with one out in the New York fourth. He was caught stealing just before Dominguez homered to right-center to make it 2-1.

CJ Abrams doubled with one out in the Washington sixth. Jacob Young singled to left, but Abrams fell rounding third and had to stay there. Fernando Cruz replaced Yankees starter Ryan Weathers and Daylen Lile, pinch hitting for Andres Chaparro, struck out. Jorbit Vivas pinch hit for Nasim Nunez and also struck out.

Weathers pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up a run on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

Nationals opener Carson Palmquist allowed a run on three hits over three innings, and bulk reliever Zack Littell allowed a run on five hits over four innings. The pair struck out a combined nine batters while walking none.

Sonny Gray-led Red Sox top Mets for 7th straight victory

Wilyer Abreu had three hits, including a two-run homer, Friday night as the Boston Red Sox capped an eventful day by beating the host New York Mets 6-2 in the opener of a three-game interleague series.

The first pitch was pushed back from 7:15 to 7:51 p.m. ET after the Red Sox didn’t land at nearby LaGuardia Airport until after 4 p.m. ET. Boston’s flight out of Chicago was delayed almost 24 hours due to multiple mechanical issues on the club’s charter plane.

Anthony Seigler was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer for the Red Sox, who won their seventh straight. Masataka Yoshida was 2-for-4 with a two-RBI double while Tsung-Che Cheng also had two hits.

Sonny Gray (11-1) won his ninth straight decision after giving up one run on five hits and one walk while striking out three over six innings.

Brett Baty homered and went 3-for-4 as he extended his career-long hitting streak to 10 games for the Mets, who lost for the second time in six games. New York scored 42 runs in its previous five contests.

Juan Soto had a sacrifice fly while Jared Young and A.J. Ewing finished with two hits apiece.

Starter Nolan McLean (6-6) allowed two unearned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings.

Seigler’s leadoff fly to left glanced off the glove of Soto for a two-base error. Seigler went to third on a bunt by Ceddanne Rafaela and Abreu walked before both runners scored on Yoshida’s two-out double down the third base line.

The Mets built a run in the third. Baty singled and stole second before Zack Short worked a walk. Baty went to third when Short was forced on Ewing’s grounder and raced home on Soto’s fly to left.

Seigler hit a two-run shot just fair down the left field line against A.J. Minter in the seventh. Abreu hit his two-run homer off Cionel Perez in the ninth.

Baty homered with two outs in the ninth.

Langford helps Rangers uncork 4-run 8th to beat Astros

Wyatt Langford slugged a tiebreaking home run as the Texas Rangers exploded for four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning en route to a 7-3 win over the Houston Astros on Friday in Arlington, Texas.

Langford answered the Astros’ rally from a three-run deficit with his ninth homer of the season.

He drilled a 1-0 fastball from left-handed reliever Bryan King 404 feet to left field, marking the first homer King (2-2) has allowed to a right-handed hitter this season.

Three batters later, Jake Burger joined Langford in that exclusive category.

After Langford supplied the Rangers with a 4-3 lead, King walked Josh Jung and surrendered a single to Brandon Nimmo before Burger smacked his 16th homer to left-center. King had not allowed more than one run since April 21 before Texas hung a four-spot on him.

Trailing 3-0 entering the top of the sixth, the Astros mounted their comeback against Rangers starter Cal Quantrill, who had retired eight consecutive batters. Yordan Alvarez blasted his 30th home run of the season and 200th of his career leading off the sixth, a 455-foot shot to right.

Yainer Diaz clubbed a two-run homer off Texas reliever Chris Martin that knotted the score at 3-3 in the seventh.

Quantrill stranded Jeremy Pena and Isaac Paredes in the first after Pena was doubled off at second base on a Christian Walker flyout to left field. Jose Altuve and LaMonte Wade Jr. stroked consecutive singles to open the second, only for Quantrill to retire the subsequent three batters.

After Alvarez singled with one out in the third, Quantrill hit his stride before Alvarez struck a bigger blow. Quantrill allowed one run on five hits and one walk with one strikeout in six innings.

The Rangers struck for two runs in the bottom of the first against Astros right-hander Hunter Brown. Nimmo plated Langford on a double and Burger followed with a run-scoring groundout that drove home Jung.

Joc Pederson stretched that lead to 3-0 with his leadoff homer in the fifth, his 15th of the season.

Brown labored but completed six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts.
